The World NEXT ends

This Saturday morning, ESPN2 is showing a special game - LSU vs. Tulane (11 am CDT). If you're not from Louisiana, you might not care too much about it. It looks like a regional rivarly game between a highly ranked team and an unranked one (albeit with a new and exciting coach).

First you have to understand the background. Tulane has traditionally been the 'uppity' Hawvard of the South and has the support of the New Orleans upper class. LSU has traditionally been the bastion of the hoi polloi, the great unwashed part of Louisiana. You could say Tulane favors scotch, LSU favors beer. I have degrees from both, so I guess I can double fist! ,

This Saturday they will come together in the Superdome to play for the 96th time. This time while they compete on the field, they'll be pulling for the same thing off it - rebuilding Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

In this case, Nike has donated a set of limited edition jerseys to the two teams. Sales of this and other related apparel will have part of the proceeds earmarked for assisting the youth of New Orleans.

I couldn't find any pictures of the Tulane uniform, so I've included shots of both the 'standard' LSU purple and the special uniform below.

Both teams will wear the special logo which is supposed to be a combination of phoenix and pelican. The brown pelican is the state bird of the Louisiana (not, as you would expect the mosquito!), and the phoenix is (of course) a symbol of rebirth.

Watch the game - enjoy the game... buy some of the apparel! For many years, LSU and Tulane fans have nitpicked and disliked each other and the other team. Watch as we show that we can look past all that and pull for what's really important.

Here's the special uniform, white pants, white helmet, and the special logo.

Thought I'd get a rise out of you with that post.

Yes, I was bit surly, and it was probably unbecoming.

Unlike my old boss and your old guidance counselor, I do usually want LSU to do well.

The one thing I don't regret pointing out is the funny spectacle of rabid Republicans and libertarians rooting on the epitome of government subsidy. That's funny.

LSU-Tulane was actually a heckuva football game. As you indicate, it's great for everybody that the rivalry is renewed.

P.S. The Phoenix-style pelican is totally cool.

Indeed - ironies abound! I read somewhere something relevant:

'This is dedicated to the resurrection of New Orleans, Louisiana. Our rich culture, care for one another, and roll-up-our-sleeves tenacity will lead New Orleans into a new golden era. "...everyone who knows New Orleans loves it because it is the most down-to-earth, real place in the country. There is no poser action in this city. It is the real deal--what you see is what you get." Humid Haney'
