The World NEXT ends

Think about this for a minute. Twittering about twitter being back up. I've reallly tried to get into Twitter. I twittered during Lotusphere. I installed TwitNotes (which is very nice work, btw, and shows both the power and the overly complicated dev process required for sidebar apps).

In the end, the noise/value ratio kills it. I really could care less about 99.1% of what's posted to it. There really is such a thing as TMI. There's also a very significant ASW streak to what folks post (which I guess explains why so many bloggers are on Twitter), and this does not endear me to it either.

ack!! I guess I've gone through the "gosh, all new technology is AWESOME." phase of life and have now passed into the "what can it do for me." phase. When I'm interested in what someone's doing I, like, TALK to them either via phone, email, IM, or (shockingly) in person.

A more significant but subtler issue is that Twitter may let you feel connected to others, but it's not a real replacement for personal interaction. It's certainly easier than actually talking to another human. I think I'd call it "relationship cocaine." Or, Twitter is like the movie they made from the book. The book is always better.

no, please!

There are couple of theories that get proposed by Twitter-ites (I'm leaning toward just "twits") as to why anyone would not just Ah-Dore twitter

The most obvious is the "your to old to get it" argument. Well, I'm GenX so I should be able to get it, but I do prefer to spell things correctly, which may be part of the problem. It's also possible that not being 18 anymore is messing with my ability to enjoy Twitter. When I was younger, I may well have benefited from knowing that other folks do the same boring things that I do. Twitter is like a direct RSS feed into the boring parts of peoples' lives. But now I've been there, done that. However, every once in a while, something useful pops up.

that's good to know

So, what's my point? I'm actually not really sure, other than I've seen the downside of Twitters and maybe someone can tell me the the overwhelming upside....

There are several definitions of twit, but since I grew up on Monty Python, I'll end with the one that sticks in my memory.
