The World NEXT ends

I'm in a grumpy mood this week, I guess. For some reason, this post by Serdar Basegmez just resonated with me.

I have a bunch of ideas over there. Here's a link to my ideas over there. I used to try and come up with ones that would improve IBM's product and address real issues that I see day-to-day at client sites.

You may not be aware of this, but IBM is a for-profit company. That means that it owns Notes, Domino, Portal, Connections, etc. and makes money selling licenses and (more importantly) selling hardware to run it on and consultants to install/maintain/Migrate them to new versions. It has business partners that it tolerates, and they tend to make money in the niches that IBM doesn't feel like competing in. Like greenfield Notes/Domino sales, for instance.

OpenNTF is a great thing, and IBM is finally providing them with the support they have deserved since day one.

IBM has hordes of truly brillant folks. But one thing that strikes me is that IBM doesn't listen to it's customers. They prefer to take the line that they are leading their customers. Be that as it may. I just want to point out that, for example, taking one of your leading product sets and letting it out to dry for 5 years, then saying - "folks want things that Connections and Portal provide more, see - they're buying more of it". Isn't really leadership, it's throttling one product set because you want the other to succeed.

Back to my topic. As mentioned, I have quite a few  ideas over at IdeaJam. I made a cutoff at 16 votes and thought I'd review the status of them below:

When ActiveSync support was annouced, I was of two opinions:

1) Cool! II know it's for iPhone support at first, but They. Get. It. Given the sedate pace that IBM develops software, It's impossible to support the huge variety of phones out there with your own custom written software in reasonable time frames. They won't be as arrogant as Apple and think that they can best determine what phones my users should carry.

2) Cool! A great solution to the iPhone issue. Only 1.5 years late, but hey. It's good.

Obviously the impressive growth in functionality of the meeting server part of sametime in 8.5 is very cool. However, there's a concomitant huge increase in configuration & hardware requirements.

I'd like to see the chat & IM gateway portions split off and simplified so they could be deployed ...
A "simplified" WAS-based product?  Whatever you're on, I want some.

The blog template is a nifty, feature rich application. However, it hasn't been enhanced much since introduction. Some basic things it needs are:
+ The ability (via wizard) to easily import, edit,  and apply blog templates from Blogger, WordPress, etc.

Nope.

But "if you want a real blog, we have this social media product that does blogging." I have heard an IBM sales rep say that. In all seriousness.

On a positive note: Steve Castledine rocks. Just had to say that.

Because it's true.

Archive policies should be enhanced with a "retention period" model.

There are ways to conceptually do this now, but the Archive policy process should be enhanced to reflect a multistep process:

Arrive in mailbox
Move to archive (by policy definitions)
Delete/expire (by policy definitions)
Nope. Because the hardware groups and  Global Services just makes more money on Exchange (and Domino -> Exchange migrations!), we don't plan on giving Lotus all the resources it needs to keep up with Exchange 2010.

Domino person record needs to contain the location (or replica ID) of the user's primary mail archive.

We need to think of a user's mail file and archive as connected facets of the user mail experience. Right now in most domino shops, the person record contains their mail file location, roaming profile database location, public key, sync'd password for sametime/inotes, even businesscard picture. One thing that's missing from the information stored in the person record is the location of the user's primary archive.

I guess ideally, since the archive could be on the server and replicated locally it should have both a path & file name and/or the replica ID of the archive.

This would assist mail file

Domino Express licenses are a very nifty way to get & deploy N/D for smaller customers.

BUT if you want to do something very simple, like have a backup server at a DR site that's 'hot' and  ready, you enter a pretty complicated licensing situation.

Domino clustering is (honestly) ...
Nope. Because you LIKE mind boggling licensing models. Our sales reps tell us that.

Did we mention that some of them started out as used car sales reps?

Two things I have found to get ideas into the product:

1) Add "Outlook (or "Exchange") does it"

and/or

2) Also get a customer to PMR it and have them link the idea to it.

But on the whole, I agree with you. Not many of the hundreds of good enhancements make it in. A shame.

@2 - thanks for the detail. My point is that I haven't posted any significant ideas of late, and will not.

Not because IdeaJam is not a great product, but because the vendor/target of that instance does not listen.

Good news about policies for Integrated Sametime, if your NAB is 8.5 (maybe Notes must also be 8.5, I don't know): you can put name/value pairs from this documentation ({ Link } ) into Desktop Settings-Custom Settings-Managed Settings.

@4 This is very true. I have a Chrome bookmark that I need to go find that points to a blog entry that goes over this.

BUT... that should be in Admin HELP. It'd be one thing if this was open source, but PAYING clients shouldn't have to dig that hard to find out how to set up their environment.

@4 I also want to point out that the way the integrated Sametime is (un)documented is an example (most likely) of the kind of implementation we can expect from when Vulcan begins to see the light of day.

Look at how the new WAS-based Sametime is documented and how 'easy' it is to install and deploy. It doesn't even include startup scripts to load it when the OS starts! (apparently fixed in ST 8.5.1, but I haven't validated that).

Of course, it doesn't have to be this way - IBM could choose to document and tests it's new world order products before unleashing them on it's paying clients.

I truly hope they change their approach. We'll see.

Craig,

I am terribly sorry to keep you so busy if I inspired you about this effort :))) just joking.

Several months ago, I examined whether these ideas are being listened by IBM or not... Results were as expected and your summary is striking.

I posted an entry that time (in Turkish unfortunately) about idea exchange platforms. I claimed that there is a danger not to listen or utilize ideas from these ideas. This behaviour leads to decrease 'trust' for the brand and generate a 'social network groups with negative feeling/perception' which is the current situation...

Total wasted opportunity for IBM.

8) IdeaJam Only Works If The Ideas Are Being Implemented
Gregg Eldred http://www.ns-tech.com/blog/geldred.nsf 8/13/2010 1:51:04 PM

I have given your post a lot of thought. What I have determined is that the IdeaSpaces to which we contribute seems to be a method to keep the "complaining hordes" quiet.

"Give them an IdeaSpace and maybe they will shut up. Or, if they DO say something, tell them to put it in IdeaJam and we will evaluate it."

Like taking a sugar pill that doctor tells us will cure our sickness. We feel as though we are contributing, but no one is on the other end of the line, listening.

I love IdeaJam, but in this particular case, it is, frankly, worthless. If IBM isn't going to do anything with the ideas (and to date I would say that extremely few have been implemented), take this particular IdeaJam down. It's only wasting time and providing a false sense of communication and feedback.

This is one of the saddest, most pathetic blog posts I have seen in a while. I appreciate the time it took you to gather the information and post it.

The IdeaJam is not a waste of time and be it only for taking away an excuse for not being aware of an issue.

I've had a good laugh about some of the Status/Response/Action comments. Very, very funny.

It is not an IBM tool and there has never been an official commitment for anything besides that IBM will monitor it.

Also some issues are about topics that IBM has already solved with

- move to XPages

- move to Lotus Live

- OpenNTF/the Lotus community will fix this for us

I think the 8.5.2 mail template shows return receipts and prompts you to send (or not send) them.

I have found is that it is far more effective at getting IBM's attention if you create an SPR via IBM support and then post the idea here. Quoting the SPR in the idea is also helpful so others can call and add their company to the list requesting the enhancement.

A rather silly way to do things for sure, but sometimes it is easier to find a way to accomplish your goal within their rules rather than trying to get the rules changed.

@12 - I haven't looked at 8.5.2 CD5 or Gold, but it was not in 8.5.2 CD4. Perhaps you're using the OpentNTF template for 8.5.1? { Link }

@13 - I'm not trying to get them to change. I'm just highlighting the fact they don't listen well. With family, work, etc. I have better things to do with my life than help a highly profitable company unbreak itself.

The first step is to realize that you have a problem, and IBM is not even close to that. They're highly profitable doing things the way they do. Why would they change?

@7 - Lotus haa done better internationally over the last 5 years than here in the US, and I'd assumed that was because IBM actually tried to sell Lotus outside the US. Your post made me aware that either that's not true, or it's changing.

A couple of years ago at Lotusphere during Business Development Day, IBM had a discussion about the "wisdom of crowds" and how Partners could & should use this to deliver solution. When I raised the point that the vast majority of customers (crowds) had chosen Quikr/D instead of Quickr/J, I was told that the "wisdom of crowds" doesn't apply to product development.

IBM should put a hold on 'Vulcan' and fix the god damn simple current issues first.

Or make an extra number for release: 8.6 like they did with 4.6 before releasing Notes 9.
