As part of my job, I get to work with cellular phone & data service provided by many companies. I've worked a lot in the last couple of years with Alltel, Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, and T-Mobil.
Of all of them, my experience with Cingular is by far the worst. On different handsets, with different users and uses, Cingular drops calls more often than any provider I've ever seen. What's worst to me is the whole "bar" thing. My Cingular devices will happily display 2-3-4 bars and then when I check my voicemail, I'll have 2-3 messages. While my phone is displaying good connectivity. Or, I'll try and place a call and get a Cingular message "sorry, no go".
I'm beginning to think that they rig the phone's bars to back up their "more bars in more places" ads. Sprint and T-Mobile don't have as good a coverage area as Cingular, but at least they seem to be honest and display NO SERVICE... when there's no service.
In the support area, they all are pretty much horrible, esp. on the data side. Finding a knowledgeable person is really hard, with one exception. Alltel has the most amazing support (for a cell company). I've called quite a few times and each time pretty quickly (in celluar-support time, not CDT) gotten to someone who knew what a Treo or Blackberry were and could help fix my issues - Once you get past the initial "on hold hell", that is....
