I've bolded the area in the article (below) that bothers the heck out of me.
I know we're all worried about our jobs and everything, but having seen up close & personal what the natural world can do to us lately, shouldn't we like put some money into finding these a bit earlier than 2 days?!?
Nothing like a blazing fireball that wipes out your entire state to mess up your retirement planning.
From the AP (link):
Phew! Asteroid's passing was a cosmic near-miss
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - An asteroid about the size of one that blasted Siberia a century ago just buzzed by Earth.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported that the asteroid zoomed past Monday morning.
The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon.
The space ball measured between 69 feet and 154 feet in diameter. The Planetary Society said that made it the same size as an asteroid that exploded over Siberia in 1908 and leveled more than 800 square miles of forest.
Most people probably didn't notice the cosmic close call. The asteroid was only spotted two days ago and at its closest point passed over the Pacific Ocean near Tahiti.

It doesn't bother my half as much as what is happening to what used to be the freedom loving US of A. I'd rather be obliterated in a heartbeat by an asteroid than suffer a slow and withering death under socialism. :-(
Fortunately, you won't need to, Jerry. You're covered medical care will help you through whatever it is that's causing you so much pain. In the mean time, you'll be able to switch job without fear that this un-named disease you have will cause you to lose your coverage when you do.
It really will be much nicer.
I'm just really glad that we've ended the rampant partisanship that wracked our country during years past.
;-)
Why can't we just apply the technology developed in the Asteroids arcade game to save the Earth? :-)
OK - please don't take this as partisan, but if we can set up borderCams to let folks watch the US/Mexican border

Can't we even think about something similar for more world-changing things?
@4 I like that. Maybe they can make an app you can load on your phone to defend us.
... but that's starting to sound "Ender's Game"-ish, isn't it?
